Starting Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy can be a wonderful but challenging process. Answers to some common questions are included below. If you have further questions or would be interested in an initial consultation, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Malark directly.
What is psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is a process of working with a professional to learn more about yourself and develop new ways of meeting life's challenges. This process can help people to live in more open, active, and enriching ways. Psychotherapy can be as effective for everyday, common problems as it can be for major mental illnesses. Psychotherapy can be short-term or long-term, depending on the needs of the individual.
What type of therapy can I expect?
Dr. Malark works with each individual to craft an approach that fits their specific goals, values and priorities. Dr. Malark approaches each therapeutic relationship as a unique and collaborative experience. Primarily, Dr. Malark practices psychodynamic psychotherapy. This approach helps people to understand how past relationships and unconscious conflicts may be influencing their ability to lead more fulfilled lives in the present. Dr. Malark also has training in cognitive-behavioral therapy, which examines how ways of thinking impact feelings and actions, and interpersonal therapy, which helps people to develop more supportive and positive relationships.
What if I don't know what's wrong?
That's ok. It is very common for people to seek out a meeting with a psychologist because of a general sense that something in their life isn't working - they may feel stuck, lost, or unsure. The first several sessions will help to focus on the nature of the problem(s), what you would like to change, and how psychotherapy can help you to reach those goals. If it is decided that another course would better suit you, Dr. Malark can work with you to find the best referral options.
How long are sessions?
Psychotherapy sessions are typically 45-50 minutes. The frequency of sessions can be discussed during your first appointment.
What can I expect to pay?
Dr. Malark will discuss fees with you during the initial phone conversation before your first appointment. Currently, Dr. Malark is an out-of-network provider and will assist you with any out-of-network paperwork your insurance provider requires. Dr. Malark accepts payment via credit card.
What about medication?
The question of medication (for example, an antidepressant) is a common one and the answer is different for each person. Some people find it helpful to include medication in their treatment, while others do not. The choice is yours, and Dr. Malark can help you to arrive at the decision that is best for you. Your initial sessions will clarify the nature of the presenting concerns and whether or not consulting with a psychiatrist would be helpful.
